Windows 95 Software Updates

Important: These updates are NOT for any newer versions of Windows! Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP users should click on Windows Update in the Start menu.

  1. Clean your hard drive. Close any programs you have running and if you have a screensaver that comes on, disable the screensaver or keep your mouse moving to prevent it from coming on.
    • Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Scandisk
      (choose "standard" and "Automatically fix errors")
    • Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter
      (even if it says it's not necessary, do so anyway)
  2. Find out what version of Windows 95 you have by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon:
    4.00.950 (original release of Windows 95)
    4.00.950a (same as above, but has Service Pack 1 installed)
    4.00.950 B (sometimes referred to as OSR 2)
  3. Download the following files in any order, but save them into some temporary directory (e.g. c:\temp)
  4. After all files have been downloaded, disconnect from internet and close any other applications that are running (except for Windows Explorer--so you can run each of these files).
  5. Run each of these files in the following order, rebooting your computer whenever the system tells you to do so:
